Will I qualify for free external wall insulation?

All UK landlords and homeowners can qualify to receive grants for external wall insulation as long as you own at least 50 percent of your home. If you own part of a Housing Association property, you will also be entitled to receive a grant to support an installation.

Tenants of Housing Association and Council properties should speak to these authorities directly, or contact the Energy Saving Trust instead for assistance.

If you are unable to cover the costs required for your contribution, you’ll find multiple options on offer which you can select from. The most affordable option in many cases is to simply extend your existing mortgage, but finance solutions like home improvement loans are also possibilities for consideration.

What is involved in external wall insulation?

External wall insulation typically comprises a layer of dedicated insulating material, often 60mm boarding. The insulation is fitted to the exterior walls before being covered with cladding or render. Depending on your taste there is a wide range of different finishes that you can pick from. Common choices include a stone or brick effect, painted, tiled, textured and smooth.

External Wall Insulation is designed to deliver a weatherproof layer, protecting your property’s brickwork from the elements while preventing issues like damp and reducing noise pollution inside.

The reasons that this dedicated insulation material is installed on the external walls of properties is to ensure it never reduces the floor area within, but also to make sure that the installation can be performed with minimal disruption to residents. An added benefit of external wall installation is that it can often raise the value of your property, enhance its appearance and lead to significant savings on annual home heating bills.
